A group of kids approach an elderly man named Goichi at a water mill and ask him to tell them a story while their rice cooks. He obliges and tells them about The Two Dogs, a tale in which two dogs discover a piece of meat on the road but become greedy and start fighting over it. They eventually decide to divide the meat using a ruler and saw, only to begin arguing again over its size. To settle their dispute, they call upon a wise monkey who eats one of the larger pieces until both are reduced to small portions. The dogs then cry as Goichi concludes his story by teaching the children that being greedy can result in losing out.
