In 551 BCE, in the Chinese state of Lu, a man named Confucius is born. Tragically, his father dies when he's just three years old, and he's raised by his mother. At age 19, Confucius gets married, then goes into service for the local nobility. When he turns 32, he becomes a tutor to the children of the Prince of Lu. Over time, he rises in rank to become a politician himself, serving as justice minister and eventually prime minister. During his tenure, the land thrives for four years. However, Confucius grows disillusioned with court intrigues and decides to leave Lu to wander neighboring states. For 12 years, he provides counsel to rulers in these regions.
