What is happiness? This is a question that high school student Ritsu Shikishima enjoys pondering during his peaceful days with friends. However, when he hears a strange voice obscured by static pleading for help, his world begins to unravel. The voice belongs to μ, a beloved pop idol whose singing has an adverse effect on the world. Before Ritsu's eyes, his friends and family become distorted by glitches as their faces transform into Digiheads: berserk monsters bent on exterminating all who awaken to the true nature of existence. Realizing that he is trapped in a virtual world called Mobius created by μ, Ritsu must gather those who have realized the truth and use their newfound powers and weapons granted by emotions-known as the Catharsis Effect-to fight off The Ostinato Musicians as they struggle to escape.
