The narrative unfolds during the summer of 1907, marking the 40th year of Japan's Meiji era. At that time, 15-year-old Inako Momokawa resides in Fushimi, Kyoto, and is the second child of a sake brewer. Despite her consistent efforts, she frequently receives criticism from her father. Her only source of comfort comes from her devotion to her religious beliefs. While visiting Fushimi Inari shrine, she encounters Kihachi Sakamoto, an audacious young man who challenges traditional customs and embraces the future of electricity. As marriage discussions arise in Inako's household, her father makes all the decisions without considering her desires. Feeling hopeless, Inako confides in Kihachi about her longing to escape from her family. To prevent her arranged marriage, they must locate an unusual book titled "Electricity Catalog," written by Kihachi as a child and taken away by his older brother Seiroku. Together, Inako and Kihachi embark on a quest across Kyoto and Shiga prefectures to recover the lost book.
