In the future, as Earth's population grows rapidly, humanity constructs massive space colonies called "Sides." These clusters are governed by elites on Earth who force most of the population into space. Rebellion against this oppression begins to emerge. The year is Universal Century 0079 and one of these colony clusters, known as Side 3, declares independence from Earth Federation. Despite having fewer resources than the Federation, Zeon quickly gains an advantage in the conflict through the use of giant humanoid robots called mobile suits. Char Aznable, a mysterious masked man who leads Zeons mobile suit squadron, is one of its top pilots. When his men come across the Federation developing a prototype mobile suit called Gundam in colony Side 7, they launch an attack. Amuro Ray, the son of the Gundams developer, gets into the machine and successfully defends against the Zeon assault. However, when he faces off directly with Char, Amuro must flee on a Federation ship.
