Tetsurou Hoshino is a young man who seeks revenge against Count Mecha for murdering his mother by obtaining an immortal mechanical body. However, due to its high cost, he can only hope to obtain it by stealing a boarding pass from the Galaxy Express 999, a space train that travels across the galaxy and stops at planets where metal replacements are provided for free. After getting on the train, Tetsurou is pursued by law enforcement and collapses into the arms of Maetel, who looks like his mother. She tells him she will provide entry onto the 999 if he travels with her. He agrees and boards the cosmic railway with Maetel, beginning a journey across the galaxy.
