Takumi Fujiwara is not particularly interested in cars or driving enthusiasts. He has little knowledge about these topics. His daily routine involves delivering tofu every morning, which he does by driving along the mountain of Akina. Conversations about cars and driving would remind him of his tiring routine. One night, the infamous Red Suns team visits Akina to challenge the local mountain pass. Led by their aces Ryousuke and Keisuke Takahashi, they plan to conquer every racing course in Kanto and become the fastest crew in the region. However, during a drive back home from Akina, one of their aces is overtaken by an old Toyota AE86. After this incident, the Takahashi brothers are cautious about a mysterious driver with exceptional technique and experience on local roads - the AE86 of Mount Akina.

Initial D is a popular franchise spawning a sizeable number of racing games released for arcades, home consoles, handhelds, and PC. The series was also adapted into a live-action movie in 2005, co-produced by Japans Avex Inc. and Hong Kongs Media Group. While the film deviated considerably from the original story, it was nominated for multiple awards and won many of them, at the Hong Kong Film Awards and Golden Horse Awards.
