In 2005, twenty-one years after the conflict between the Autobots and Decepticons resumed on Earth, the Decepticons had conquered Cybertron, their home planet. During a surprise attack by the Decepticons, both sides engaged in a brutal battle at Autobot City. Optimus Prime, leader of the Autobots, was killed during his fight with Megatron, the leader of the Decepticons. The Matrix of Leadership was then passed on to Ultra Magnus, second-in-command. Meanwhile, Megatron was badly damaged and jettisoned into space by Starscream. He encountered Unicron, a planet-eating robot, and was reborn as Galvatron, the new leader of the Decepticons. With Galvatrons rule increasing and Unicrons imminent arrival within Cybertrons orbit, the Autobots had to act quickly to protect the Matrix or face total destruction.
