Ryouhei Arisu is a high school student who lacks ambitions and feels that reality is meaningless. During a night out with friends Daikichi Karube and Chouta Segawa, they witness an unusually large firework explode into the sky, signaling a significant change in their lives. The explosion leaves them blinded and transports them to the Borderland, a world inhabited by participants of a deadly game where specific tasks must be completed to survive. As Ryouhei and his friends begin playing to find a way back home, Ryouhei discovers that he feels alive for the first time in his life.
