The Z Project aimed to provide the new generation with relief from caring for the elderly by creating a machine that could care for them without any intervention. Initially, this idea was well-received among many young people. However, when Mr. Takazawa, an old man, became the first test subject of the Z-001 machine, Haruko raised concerns about both the hospital's tactics and the ethical implications of such a machine. Despite facing opposition from the hospital and other obstacles, Haruko persevered. Later on, she discovered that the Z-001 machine used a biochip, which eventually allowed it to develop its own mind.
Roujin Z won the Mainichi Film Award for animation in 1991.
