Jackie Rhodes, a British girl living with her family in Kenya, discovers an injured bushbaby and decides to adopt it. She names him Murphy and nurses him back to health. With Murphy by her side, Jackie and her loved ones embark on numerous adventures involving wildlife, poachers, and other challenges. However, when Jackie's father is called back to England, she must leave Africa behind. Before she departs, Jackie, Murphy, and Tembo, a friend of Jackie's father, go on one final adventure together. They must cross the dangerous savannah in order to evade poachers and corrupt police officers who are pursuing them. During this journey, Jackie teaches Murphy how to survive in the wild so that he can be released into his natural habitat before she leaves.
