Hinata, inspired by seeing his idol from Karasuno High School win a volleyball game on TV, decides to try playing the sport himself. Despite his short stature, he enrolls at the same school as his idol in hopes of joining the team. However, upon meeting Tobio Kageyama, another talented player from Karasuno, their rivalry forces them both to be excluded from the team until they can learn to work together as teammates. Despite their initial reluctance, their shared love for volleyball causes them to come up with a plan to prove their worth as team players. As they form an unlikely partnership as setter and ace, they are invited for practice matches against their old rival school, reigniting competition between the two schools once more.
