At 17 years old, rei kiriyama is a professional shogi player who has achieved great success in middle school. however, this achievement comes with immense pressure from both the shogi community and his adoptive family. in order to escape the tension at home, he decides to move into an apartment in tokyo. living on his own, rei neglects his health and becomes reclusive, isolating himself from others.
soon after moving to tokyo, rei meets akari, hinata, and momo kawamoto, three sisters living with their grandfather who owns a traditional wagashi shop. akari takes it upon herself to help rei overcome his loneliness and improve his lifestyle by showing him kindness and hospitality. the kawamoto sisters also share with rei a familial bond that he has been missing for most of his life, as they too have experienced past tragedies.
as rei continues to navigate the challenges of his shogi career, he must learn how to interact with others and understand his own complex emotions in order to maintain both his physical and mental well-being.
