In 2035, an event known as "The Burst" takes place at a Japanese research facility, resulting in the emergence of a rapidly expanding and self-replicating entity called "Matter." This hostile force makes its way through the remains of dams and military facilities in the Kurobe Gorge. Various task forces are deployed to stop it from reaching the ocean, while mercenaries seek to uncover the truth behind its existence. Aiko Tachibana is rescued from the Matter and placed under constant medical surveillance. She spends her days making paper planes at school until Yuuya Kanzaki arrives as a transfer student. He notices inconsistencies in her story, such as her lack of injuries and sudden independence from her wheelchair. Yuuya believes that there is more to Aiko's existence than what she has been led to believe, and he claims that she holds the key to ending The Burst. As a result, many factions become interested in Aiko, and she and Yuuya must gather allies and embark on a dangerous journey into the heart of the infested gorge before it's too late. To escape the conspiracy, they will face off against the Matter, an enemy that flows like water.
