In a barren land, several young females possess unusual abilities and cling to existence near a train that has grown through it. Their daily struggle for survival is disrupted by Wakaba, a boy with no recollection of his past beyond his name. The girls and their new companion embark on a treacherous journey across red fog-filled seas to locate the resources necessary to sustain themselves on distant, dangerous islands infested with mechanical insects. Their fate will be determined by their own strength as well as Wakabas unique ability to comprehend the Kemurikusa: luminescent leaves imbued with astonishing powers. Besides the girls, Wakaba, and the swarms of predatory bugs, the Kemurikusa are the only remaining sources of life in this land. How did things come to be this way? What accounts for the numerous abandoned buildings without inhabitants? The answers to these questions elude Wakaba and the girls, meaning that the truth can only be uncovered through the examination of the Kemurikusa.
