In 1610, the Rinzai Zen Buddhist monk Takuan was appointed abbot of Daitokuji temple. Known for his brutally honest character and keen observational skills, he was highly sought after by individuals from various walks of life such as monks, swordsmen, and politicians including Tokugawa Iemitsu and Go-Mizunoo. Takuan's correspondence with Yagyū Munenori is documented in "The Unfettered Mind," a treatise that captures his insights on the path to enlightenment. Through this correspondence, Takuan helped capture Takezo and later renamed him Miyamoto Musashi, freeing him to embark on a journey of personal growth and evolution.
