Yuugi and Jounouchi have a close friendship. Initially, Jounouchi would tease Yuugi, but after being rescued by him from a dangerous situation, their bond grew stronger. Nowadays, Jounouchi enjoys spending time with Yuugi and learning new games. Although he is not always confident in his abilities, he consistently tries his hardest. The reason for Jounouchi's participation in the Duelist Kingdom Tournament is to earn money for his sister, Shizuka, who is losing her vision. He hopes to use this funds to pay for her surgery.
