In their initial encounter, Naomi comes across Jack while he is performing his duties as an immigration inspector. He advises her to return home, but she disregards him. Despite this, Jack consistently appears in the places where Naomi travels and eventually joins her on her quest to find her parents. Mingo speculates that Jack may have romantic feelings for Naomi, but Jack maintains that there are other motivations driving his journey westward.
