Oikawa is the captain and setter for Aoba Jousai High School's Volleyball Club, as well as a former teammate of Kageyama at Kitagawa Daiichi. While Kageyama describes him as an extremely intelligent and cunning individual with a bad personality, Oikawa frequently makes cheerful remarks but follows them up with serious or intimidating afterthoughts. Despite his flirtatious exterior, he is also very talented in volleyball and setter play. However, Kageyama calls him Tobio-chan, which has led to a grudge between the two. This is due to Oikawa's feelings of inferiority compared to Kageyama, who was hailed as a genius setter at Kitagawa Daiichi. Kageyama's presence can bring out more childish or rash aspects of Oikawa's personality.
