Fee Carmichael is the American pilot of the "Toy Box," a debris-collecting ship used by the main characters of Planetes. She was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, to a prominent lawyer. While she can be loud and brash at times, Fee always means well. Despite being a heavy smoker, she struggles to find places to indulge her habit while in space due to smoking's impact on life support systems. This often makes her irritable, especially when designated smoking rooms are shut down as the SDF begins planting bombs in them. In the anime, Fee uses an enclosed personal "smokers seat" to get around this issue, although it is prone to sabotage. When not in space, Fee lives in Florida with her husband and young son.
