Yumi was a highly respected courtesan in japan's red-light district of yoshiwara. as an oiran, she was known for her beauty, intelligence, and refinement. she grew up in comfort due to her profession and had a keen interest in social issues happening in the country. however, she strongly opposed the government's treatment of prostitutes as inferior beings, like cows or horses. yumi fell deeply in love with makoto shishio, who reciprocated her feelings. she joined his conspiracy to overthrow the meiji government and was always concerned about his health.
