Gintoki's landlady, Ayano Terada (also known as Ms. Otose), is a woman with a tragic past. She was once very beautiful and worked at a restaurant before being fired for secretly giving dumplings to poor children. Despite her hardships, she remains confident in Gintoki's ability to protect her, even though he often struggles to pay his rent. In episode 22, Ms. Otose demonstrates her martial arts skills by dodging Ayame's flying kick and catching a dagger with two fingers. She is one of the four "emperors" who rule the Kabuki District and takes her name from a real person who ran a hotel during the Bakumatsu period, where she often hid rebels from the Shinsengumi.
