Ryu, the pilot of Godphoenix and backup member of Team, has a family consisting of his father and younger brother Seiji, who are still alive. His fellow team members treat him with extra care to prevent injury or death due to this personal connection. Despite this, Ryu wishes for more action and often feels frustrated by being treated as though he is fragile. He is a typical "country boy" from Japan, characterized by his regional accent, love of the ocean, and hobbies such as fishing, sailing, and scuba diving. His massive build is almost entirely muscle, yet he is always hungry. A recurring joke in the series revolves around Ryu's poor luck with women; he is the only character actively seeking a romantic relationship.
