Yamato was a highly skilled sprinter who ranked first nationally in the 100 meter sprint. He attended Toudo University High School, where he faced tough competition from Kazuki, which remains a sensitive topic for him to this day. Despite his success, Yamato has always had a dedicated group of fans that follow him to tournaments. Like Suzuka, Yamato decided to study abroad in the United States during middle school and kept track of Yamatos running times while he was away. After returning home, Yamato joined Touto University's track team and was used by Tetsuhiko and Souichi to help revive his competitiveness. However, when Yamato asked what was wrong during a walk home, Yamato responded that if it were him, he would have the girl get an abortion because track is the most important thing to him. This statement sparked a heated argument between Suzuka and Yamato, as Suzuka is also very important to Yamato. Near the end of the series, Yamato told Yamato through Kenji that they should meet again in the Olympics, with Arima and Kenji representing Japan in the 100m and 200m races.
