Rex is part of Diablos' cult, which recruits and trains children with magical abilities. Despite being brainwashed, Rex was able to maintain his own thoughts and rose through the ranks. He became a skilled fighter and earned a name. Along with other nameless members of the cult, Rex led an attack on Midgar's Royal Academy of Magical Swordsmen.
