Onix is a Pokémon made of a chain of gray boulders, with black eyes, a rounded snout, and a rocky spine on top of its head. Its length makes it the tallest Rock-type Pokémon. As it grows older, its body becomes more rounded and smoother, resembling black diamonds. Inside Onix's brain is a magnet that serves as an internal compass, guiding it wherever needed and preventing it from getting lost while digging. It can tunnel under the ground at over 50 miles per hour, causing tremors and a terrifying roar that echoes far away. Hard objects encountered during tunneling are absorbed into its body, making it very sturdy. Onix consumes boulders for food and leaves behind massive, winding tunnels used as homes by Diglett. In the Pokémon Stadium series, Onix can rotate its head or any part of its body in a full 360 degrees. It is an aggressive Pokémon that attacks humans and other Pokémon when in pain, as seen in the anime. According to the manga, Onix can be separated from its body segments during battle and regenerate or reattach later on. An Onix that lives for about 100 years will evolve into a Steelix after its composition becomes more diamond-like. Onix can be found in mountains and caves.
