Kazuhiko is Masaki's cousin who lives in their hometown and works at a ryokan. They are of the same age. Masaki meets the Fujiyoshi family for the first time when he returns home to retrieve a letter from his uncle. His uncle had informed Kazuhiko of their visit so that they could all stay at the ryokan where Kazuhiko worked.
