Leon is known in Garo The Animation as Garo the Golden Knight, a title bestowed upon him by his father, German Lewis, who was also a Makai Knight. Born to Anna, a Makai Priestess, and Zoro, a Makai Knight, Leon's mother was executed for witchcraft before he could be born. Only her magic and his father's quick thinking saved him from certain death. Despite this traumatic experience, Leon grew up as a bitter and emotionless young man with a deep-seated anger towards those who wronged him or his family. He is highly distrustful of others and largely naive about the world, making social interaction difficult for him. However, beneath his apathetic exterior lies a kind-hearted soul. Leon uses his abilities as a Makai Knight to exact revenge on behalf of his mother's death rather than protect humanity from Horrors. He sees the Garo armor only as an heirloom passed down through generations and is unaware of the immense responsibility that comes with being Garo.
