Erina Pendleton initially appears as a young girl when Jonathan saves her from bullies. Later, she goes out with him and eventually falls in love. However, after Dio kidnaps her, kisses her, and then beats her brutally, she feels embarrassed and avoids Jonathan for a long time. She reappears following Dio's first near-defeat, when she helps Jonathan recover from his injuries. After that, Jonathan defeats Dio using the Ripple. They reconcile and get married before setting sail on their honeymoon to America. Unfortunately, their voyage is cut short by the return of Dio, who causes the ship to sink. Jonathan stays behind while Erina escapes with an orphaned infant. Years later, she and her grandson Joseph Joestar are the last members of the Joestar family, traveling to New York at the invitation of Speedwagon, which sets off the events of the second story arc.
