Mao is a schoolmate of kai who is known for being bossy and controlling, traits that may have been inherited from her father, the head of the jahana yakuza. she often puts up a confrontational demeanor but it's likely a brave facade she uses when things don't go her way or she feels scared. mao forces okamura to take her along on a trip after realizing he knows something about kai's disappearance, implying that her father would try to kill him for stealing money from him. despite kai's efforts to keep her safe from the danger surrounding him and saya, mao remains determined to stick by his side. as the series progresses, she comes to terms with kai not returning her feelings and grows more protective of saya, especially as her health declines.
