Masahiro is the main character in the series, an Onmyōji in training who is also the grandson of Abe no Seimei. As a child, his strong spiritual sight was temporarily sealed by Seimei until he was old enough to use it properly. After meeting Mokkun, Masahiro regained his spirit sight and embraced his destiny as an Onmyōji in service to the emperor. He is known for being friendly and kind towards both people and yōkai, while also protecting them from evil demons that reside near the imperial capital. Despite being clumsy at times, Masahiro possesses powers beyond those of a mere apprentice, earning him recognition from his grandfather as the only one who can succeed him. However, Masahiro is unhappy with being known solely as Seimei no Mago and works hard to surpass his grandfather's legacy. He has two older brothers, Narachika and Masachika, both of whom are married and have families of their own. According to Ten'itsu, children in the Abe household were often cared for by the twelve Shinshō, including Guren, who took care of Masahiro during his childhood. Later, Masahiro receives a sword called Gōma no Tsurugi, which was forged by Seimei and previously belonged to Suzaku. He is also given Kagutsuchi, flames with the power to kill gods, in order to destroy the corrupted Guren. Additionally, Masahiro erases Guren's memories of him, so that he will never remember their time together as a mononoke or while fighting demons side by side. Masahiro values his friends, family, and love for Fujiwara no Akiko, whom he vows to protect at all costs.
