Shadow is an artificial life form designed in the shape of a male hedgehog with anthropomorphic features. He shares some similarities with Sonic, such as his ability to move quickly on hover skates and use Chaos Control with Chaos Emeralds. However, Shadow distinguishes himself from Sonic through greater use of his signature power. Shadow is Sonics rival and represents the opposite of everything that Sonic stands for in life. He wears rings on his wrists to control his abilities. Shadow made a promise to Maria, a girl he met on Space Colony Ark, to give humanity a chance at happiness. Initially, he blamed humans for Marias death, but later realized that Maria wanted people on Earth to live happy lives.
