Lady Magdalia is Amakusa Shougos younger sister, who serves as a spiritual leader and teacher for their community. Since childhood, she has suffered from consumption, which may have been inherited from their mother. Accompanied by her childhood friend Shozo, she is a devoted Christian who follows her brothers teachings without question. Her most cherished possession is her mothers holy medallion, which was lost and later returned to her by Sanosuke. Despite having clashing personalities with Sagara Sanosuke, she comes to respect him and wishes that she had met someone like him earlier in life so that she could have been more open to those outside her faith. Tragically, Lady Magdalia is shot while protecting the Dutch consul, who can save her townspeople. She dies in Sanosukes arms after revealing her real name. In his memory, Shougo vows to make her dream of a peaceful and equal land a reality.
