In the narrative, Hachiman is the main character who appears aloof and solitary due to his pragmatic nature. His prominent feature are his "dead fish-eyes," which reflect his belief that youth is an illusion created by hypocrites, born from past failures. Despite this outlook, he is pressured into joining the Service Club by his future mentor with the hope of exposing him to different perspectives and ultimately transforming him into a "better person." Hachiman is affectionately referred to as "Hikki" by Yui.
