In both versions, Shigi is a skilled and honorable fighter who refused to kill Hakufu despite being ordered to do so. However, he was ultimately stabbed in the back during an assassination attempt and ended up in a coma with paralysis from the waist down. While recovering, he had been one of Ukitsus sparring partners, but it's said that Uktisu always held back when fighting him because she liked him. Despite this, Shiji was still injured during their fights. During his time in the hospital, a girl from Nanyo visited him and sat by his side. It turned out that she had been transferring her chi into him to help him recover from his injuries. In both versions, Shigi wakes up from his coma just in time for the Sekiheki battle, where he rescues several injured fighters and defeats Khannei (possessed by Ryofus bloodlust). However, there is no mention of his past with Ukitsu or any recovery from his injuries in the anime version.
