The protagonist in this story is Teito, a former slave who was captured by the Barsburg Empire and became their star pupil at the military academy. His homeland is the Kingdom of Raggs, where he grew up as an orphan in a church after his parents were killed during the invasion of his country. It's revealed later that Teito had been entrusted with the Eye of Mikhail when the Empire invaded his home, and he is actually the son of the former king of Raggs. At the start of the manga, Teito makes a promise to his best friend Mikage that they would die together. However, Mikage sacrifices himself to save Teito from the Empire, leaving Teito shaken but determined for revenge. Teito then decides to become a priest at the 7th District church in order to gain advantages on his journey towards revenge, such as free room and board in any inn in the Empire and less strict border inspections. However, he gets entangled in the affairs of the gods due to the Eye of Mikhail, which eventually brings him grief. Teito has a slave tattoo on his back from when he was first captured and wears a slave collar around his neck that will explode if he is separated from Frau for 48 hours. His birthday is December 1st, his blood type is O, he stands at 159 cm tall, weighs 43 kg, and enjoys macaroni gratin as his favorite food, melon soda as his favorite drink, and sky blue as his favorite color.
