Harrison first mentioned Birch in a flashback during Johto Photo Finish, where he appeared for the first time in Get The Show On The Road by giving May her Torchic. He later made appearances in Dewford Town during A Three Team Scheme! and Seeing is Believing!, as well as A Six Pack Attack when meeting Professor Oak. Birch was also seen on vacation at A-B-C Islands in The Evolutionary War! where he helped solve the mystery of Clamperl evolution with the twerps. His most recent appearance was a short cameo in The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon, but it is unknown if he will reappear since the main characters have left Hoenn. Birch prefers to travel by jeep and recklessly drives it. There are speculations that due to the relationship between characters in games, Birch may be the father of Brendan's anime counterpart. This character has made three short cameo appearances in the anime and has a starter Pokémon whose type weakens May's.
