Jinbe

Jinbe is a fishman who was once the second captain of the Sunny Pirates and later became a Shichibukai eight years ago. His name comes from jinbei-zame (甚平鮫), which means "whale shark" in Japanese. Although his epithet, Kaikyou, translates to "Strait" or "Channel," the kyou part of it actually comes from (海侠の) and not (海峡の). This is because the kanji for 侠 means a high-ranking member in yakuza. Therefore, Jinbe's epithet is a Japanese pun that combines his love for whale sharks with his status as a respected pirate.

He is the tenth member and the ninth to join. He permanently joins the crew shortly before they reach Onigashima. He then teams up with Luffy and the others to rescue Ace, and decided to give up his position as a Shichibukai.
