An orphan girl named Rin discovers Sesshomaru while he is recovering from a battle with InuYasha in the woods. Despite being mute due to trauma from witnessing her family's murder by bandits, she lived on the charity of a small village and mostly fended for herself. Although Sesshoumaru initially dismisses her attempts to care for him, Rin continues to bring him food and water, and is overjoyed when he asks about her injuries from the villagers, which he does not understand. When Sesshomaru prepares to leave the area, he smells Ren's blood and follows the scent to discover that she has been killed by wolves. Moved by curiosity about the sword's abilities and pity for Rin, Sesshoumaru revives her with Tenseiga. Now able to speak again, Rin becomes fiercely loyal to Sesshomaru (to Jakens dismay) and he comes to her aid when she is in danger.
