In the Toaru Majutsu no Index series, Matthew Reese, also known as Pope Clement XIII, was once a friend and disciple of Fiamma of the Right before becoming the head of the Roman Catholic Church. Unlike many popes in reality, he felt disconnected from society outside the church walls. Despite this, he adhered to the rules and beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church. When news of Touma's existence and powers reached the magic world, Fiamma convinced Pope Clement XIII that Touma was a heretic whose abilities posed a threat to the world. As a result, the pope declared him a heretic who needed to be eliminated. Matthew Reese is an elderly man with a white beard, wearing traditional papal attire and carrying a crosier adorned with images of a crucified Christ on one side and Judas Iscariot on the other.
