The main character in the series is named nils. he resides on a farm located in southern sweden along with his family. despite being sluggish and disrespectful towards others, nils enjoys mistreating animals during his leisure time. one day, the farm's tomte magically shrinks him to a size smaller than all the other animals on the farm. as a result of this transformation, nils gains the ability to communicate with animals and understand their language. however, since the farm animals are seeking retribution against him for his past wrongdoings, nils embarks on a journey northward in sweden accompanied by a flock of wild geese during summer. he hopes to regain his original size.
