Giichi was an extremely skilled Mugai-ryū assassin who managed to earn his freedom through killing a total of 59 Ittō-ryū swordsmen. Despite being one of the most successful members of the Mugai-ryū, little is known about his past or reasons for being sentenced to death. Some speculate that it may have been related to the sudden death of his sick son, Tojiro. Giichi was also a close ally of Kagimura Habaki and cared for other members of the Mugai-ryū, including Hyakurin. However, their efforts were ultimately unsuccessful in buying Hyakurins freedom. After the dissolution of the Mugai-ryū by Habaki, Giichi disappeared and was later found living among the burakumin by Rin and Hyakurin. At this point, he had become a broken man and deliberately distanced himself from Hyakurin to prevent her from suffering any more pain. He was aware of her pregnancy and tried to stop her from killing her baby. When she did try to kill the child, Giichi intervened and convinced her to carry it to term and allow him to raise it after it was born. Giichi used a unique weapon called Kanetsuras Mito-no-Kami (Guardian of the Three Paths), which resembled an oversized bladed handcuff attached to a length of chain. This weapon allowed him to sever or entangle limbs, necks and weapons from a distance. Despite its effectiveness, Manji was eventually able to break it in Volume 14 Last Blood. Giichi's first appearance is in Dark Shadows part 1.
