In the anime, the Headmaster's constant companion is a skilled ninja dog who can walk on two feet and play shougi with him. He also performs odd jobs such as cleaning and serving tea to guests. Despite being trained not to bark, his name comes from the sound he makes instead of "hemu hemu". His main job at Ninjutsu Academy is ringing the school bell.
