The former head of the Dictionary Editorial Department has chosen to retire because of his wife's illness. Before leaving, he promises Matsumoto Tomosuke that he will find someone capable of replacing him. After bringing in Majime, Matsumoto and the retired chief discover that Majime is an excellent fit for the position. The retired chief continues to mentor Majime and becomes a part-time employee at the company.
