Amuro Ray's father and former spouse was an engineer who collaborated with the Earth Federation on the V Project, a plan for developing military armaments including prototype Mobile Suits. He brought his son, Amuro, to Side 7 while leaving Kamaria behind voluntarily.
Spoilers:
After surviving the accident on Side 7 where he was sucked into outer space, presumably to his death, Tem was taken to the neutral colony of Side 6. The extended period of time he spent in space however left him with oxygen deprivation, leaving him delusional with mood swings, with his scientific mind ruined.
