In the series, we are introduced to Searchman before Laika, who appears later on. Like Laika, Searchman's primary objective is fulfilling his Net Savior responsibility, and he will do anything necessary to complete a mission, even if it means harming innocent navis. This puts him at odds with Rockman, but they eventually form an invaluable friendship. In fact, Searchman goes so far as to disobey his operator's orders to save Rockman's life, which leads to their Soul Unison and the creation of Search Soul.
