Kuchiki Byakuya's wife was deceased and older sister of his other sibling, Rukia. Despite being unable to care for them both as a baby, Hisana deeply regretted this decision throughout her life. In defiance of his family's policy against marrying commoners, Byakuya took Hisana as his wife. Shortly after their union, she fell gravely ill and eventually passed away. On her deathbed, she implored Byakuya to locate Rukia and safeguard her.
