In a flashback during a conversation between Rem and Light Yagami about killing Shinigamis, the character of Jealous is briefly mentioned. During this scene, Rem recalls that Jealous had been watching over a woman in the human world. Although surprised by his concern, Rem eventually turns to look behind him and witnesses what should have been the woman's final moments on Earth. In a dark alley, an angry man mistakes the woman for someone who broke up with him and attempts to kill her. Jealous uses his Death Note to save her life by killing her intended murderer, but he ultimately succumbs to his own actions and turns into sand and rust. Afterwards, Rem gives the Death Note to Misa Amano. The character of Jealous is commonly misspelled as "Gelus" in earlier printings of Volume 4 of the English-language manga, but his official name was later revealed to be Jealous. Kenichi Matsuyama, who played L in the live action films, provides the voice for Jealous in the anime adaptation.
