The witch who operates the spirits' bathhouse where Chihiro is forced to labor is portrayed as wicked and materialistic. Despite possessing considerable power, she transforms into a bird and displays her benevolent side only towards her son, whom she nurtures at the bathhouse. When new workers arrive, she signs contracts with them, altering their identities in the process.
