In Japanese culture, Kami-sama is respectfully referred to as "God." This term was given to him after he became the God of Earth following his half-Namekian form's good and evil halves. The latter became Piccolo Daimao. In the anime, Kami competed with Garlic for the position and emerged victorious. Three hundred years later, Garlic Jr., bearing a perpetual grudge, attempted to regain the title but failed twice. He then watched over Earth for centuries to ensure its safety.
When he learned that his other half Piccolo's spawn was threatening Earth, Kami secretly traveled to Earth and participated in the Tenka-ichi Budōkai by taking possession of a human. After advancing to the semifinals, he faced off against Piccolo in a battle over a Mafūba. However, Piccolo managed to reverse the attack, trapping Kami in the bottle himself before losing him in his match with Son Goku.
During the Artificial Human Saga, Kami agreed to merge and rejoin Piccolo so they could be evenly matched against the artificial humans.
